WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

While season was cold as everywhere on southern Yamal, adverse conditions should have been less pronounced in this relatively southern locality in comparison with vicinities of Baidaratskaya Guba. Fruiting of all berries was delaying at approximately one week. Although storm on 29 July have, probably, reached this area, berries were not frost-beaten. August was moderately warm and dry, without storms.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

average

Breeding conditions:

Owls and Northern Harriers were not seen, while Merlins were abundant as usual. Skuas were rare, and crows were mostly seen near fishing areas on the Schutchya River. Rough-legged Buzzards were less common than usual, but bred. Water insects were unusually active, and gnat were reported numerous, but supressed by storm on 29 July.
Hydrophilic waders stayed long on nesting areas, but no feeding aggregations were observed on lakes after 15 August. The only exception was Common Snipe, which groups became common after 20 August. Red-necked Phalaropes and Whimbrels dissappeared from the area by 15-17 August, while Golden Plovers remained on watershed to the end of August. Information on breeding numbers and success is not available.

Rodent dynamics:

Voles and lemmings were common only in quarries and floodplains.
